Community Support & Well-Being
African Queer Voices creates affirming spaces and pathways to support that strengthen the well-being, connection, and resilience of African LGBTQ+ immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and community members navigating displacement and transition.
We recognize that well-being is shaped by more than individual circumstances. Migration, isolation, discrimination, uncertainty around immigration status, family separation, and barriers to essential services can deeply affect a person’s sense of safety, stability, and belonging.
Through community-based support, peer connection, resource navigation, referrals, healing-centered gatherings, and partnerships with trusted service providers, AQV helps community members access information, opportunities, and networks of care that respond to their lived realities.
Our approach centers dignity, belonging, and community connection. Rather than treating people only as recipients of services, we create spaces where African LGBTQ+ people can build relationships, share knowledge, support one another, and strengthen their capacity to navigate life in their new communities.
By connecting people to community and practical pathways to support, AQV works toward a future where African LGBTQ+ people can live with greater stability, resilience, dignity, and opportunity.
Arts & Creative Expression
African Queer Voices uses arts and creative expression as powerful tools for storytelling, connection, visibility, healing, and social change. We create opportunities for African LGBTQ+ people to share their lived experiences through theatre, writing, poetry, performance, visual storytelling, and other creative forms.
Through storytelling, artistic mentorship, performances, creative collaborations, and public engagement, AQV supports community members in developing their voices, building confidence, and bringing African LGBTQ+ stories to wider audiences.
By investing in African LGBTQ+ creativity, we foster dialogue, challenge harmful narratives, strengthen belonging, and create space for community members to shape how their experiences, identities, and futures are represented and understood.
Leadership Development
African Queer Voices invests in the leadership, knowledge, confidence, and capacity of African LGBTQ+ people to become stronger advocates, community leaders, professionals, and changemakers.
Recognizing the barriers many community members face in accessing mentorship, professional networks, and leadership opportunities, AQV provides pathways for mentorship, leadership training, peer learning, skills development, networking, and professional and civic engagement.
Our approach values lived experience as a form of expertise while strengthening practical skills in communication, advocacy, community organizing, public speaking, project development, and partnership building.
By expanding access to knowledge, relationships, and opportunities, AQV works to strengthen a network of African LGBTQ+ leaders equipped to support their communities, influence institutions, create new initiatives, and help shape the decisions that affect their lives and futures.
Advocacy & Policy Engagement
African Queer Voices works to ensure that the experiences, priorities, and perspectives of African LGBTQ+ people are represented in advocacy, policy, and public decision-making spaces that affect their lives.
We engage government institutions, policymakers, public agencies, civil-society organizations, human-rights institutions, and other decision-makers to bring attention to issues affecting African LGBTQ+ communities, including immigration and asylum, human rights, healthcare, safety, discrimination, and access to essential services.
Through community-informed advocacy, policy engagement, coalition building, and direct engagement with institutions, AQV helps connect lived experience with decision-making. We work to expand opportunities for African LGBTQ+ people to participate in and influence the policies, practices, and systems that shape their communities and futures.

Through relationships grounded in mutual respect, shared learning, and community priorities, AQV connects people, organizations, resources, and opportunities across borders to strengthen collective impact and advance lasting social change.
Knowledge, Research & Public Education
African Queer Voices works to strengthen knowledge and public understanding of the experiences, contributions, and realities of African LGBTQ+ people in Africa and across the diaspora.
Through community-informed research, documentation, educational resources, public conversations, and knowledge-sharing, AQV brings lived experience and community perspectives into spaces where African LGBTQ+ people are often underrepresented.
We work with communities, researchers, educational institutions, and other partners to promote ethical and inclusive approaches to knowledge and public education.
